A Forex Lesson from the “Dollar Bear”: Technical Readings Can Help

Has Warren Buffett’s bearish greenback strategy run its course?

Matt Blackman – October 2005

Perhaps it was due to watching currency guru and fellow Democratic-supporter George Soros make huge successful bets on currencies that motivated him. Maybe it was the money he could potentially lose in his substantial U.S.-dollar-denominated assets if the dollar dropped. For whatever reason, Warren Buffett, the Oracle of Omaha, in 2002 decided to make a large bet against the buck, and in so doing enter the realm of currency trader.

Another ten countries joined the European Union in May 2004, raising the total to 25 nations that share a common market, and with few exceptions they will use the euro as their official currency. But as many as 12 of the 25 will be hard pressed this year to stay under the maximum deficit limit of three percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) set out in the Maastricht Treaty. Is Real Estate on a Down Hill Slope?

By Matt Blackman – October 2004

In March 2002, the Economist ran a story that discussed housing booms in the U.S., the U.K. and elsewhere. Examining the REIT-realty disconnect

Commentary: With home prices and markets falling, why are REITs soaring?
Matt Blackman – May 22, 2007
VANCOUVER (TSG) -- In May, the National Association of Home Builders Housing Market Index (HMI) dropped to a reading of 30 for the second time in nine months, retesting lows not seen since 1991. So if the real estate market is so challenging, why have REITs been soaring?
